Welcome To Weaving By Marla My name is Marla Dawson and I am a fiber artist. I work out of my home studio in Ellettsville, Indiana. Over the past 40 years I have been fascinated with yarn; the color, the texture and the possibilities. I have always been an avid hand knitter, but since moving to the Bloomington area here in south central Indiana, I have found that weaving and spinning my own yarns have become an intrinsic part of my art. Naturals by Marla, my business for the last 18 years, started with the concept that I enjoyed using naturals fibers and dyes to create wearable art. I used my own handspun wools, naturally dyed wools, cottons, silks and linen to create my knitted and woven pieces. Although I still get a wonderful sense of satisfaction when creating a piece from “sheep to shawl,” my emphasis on natural fibers has changed. About 10 years ago, I discovered the rich colors and luxurious texture of rayon chenille and began designing scarves and shawls using this fantastic yarn. Every piece is a product of my discovery and the wonderful possibilities that this yarn offers me as a fiber artist. All of the pieces offered to you on this site are woven by me and are my original designs. Some of my woven and knitted designs are repeatable, as I have developed several colorways that seem to appeal to a wide range of customers. At times, a particular design could be knit or woven in another color as well. Many of these pieces will be suitable for both men and women. However, some pieces are unique and will not be woven or knit again. These pieces will be marked as one of a kind. I enjoy working with individual customers wanting special designs using unique yarns and colors. Often yarn samples can be sent on request. Naturals by Marla can been seen and purchased at many fine art shows throughout the Midwest, as well as through this website. My work is also for sale at several fine shops in Indiana, Kentucky and Montana.
